HBCU Scholarships

HBCU scholarships include financial help for students attending historically black colleges and universities, generally known as HBCUs (any historically black institution or university that was founded before 1964, whose primary goal was, and is, the education of Black Americans, and that have received accreditation from a reputable organization assessed by the Secretary of Education).

Higher education has not always been accessible to all people. Black and African American students are among the many groups who have been excluded from educational opportunities. Due to this, a lot of universities and grants work to help African American students with their college expenses. These scholarships include those specifically for African American women, full-ride awards, and general awards for students from underrepresented groups.

Black students’ education has traditionally been greatly impacted by HBCUs. They were the only institutions that accepted Black students for a long time. Thankfully, this is no longer the case. They still continue to offer special advantages to Black scholars across the nation.
For those who want to attend HBCUs, there are hundreds of millions of dollars in scholarships, grants, and internships available. Here are some of the available HBCU Scholarships;

Eligibility

• The applicants must be enrolled in an HBCU and working toward an undergraduate degree in any subject.
• Must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States.
• Must be enrolled (or accepted) and intend to continue the following year at an authorized HBCU institution or university.
• Seniors in high school who satisfy the prerequisites may submit an application.
• Must still have a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours to finish.
• If the selection committee notifies you that you are the award winner, you must agree to send a digital photo of yourself and a quotation for display on Study.com.
  Deadline: May 2023
  Amount: $500
  Denny’s – Tom Joyner Foundation Hungry For Education Scholarship: Students from HBCUs who are interested in applying must write an essay of no more than 200 words on the subject “Describe your most memorable community service or activity to combat hunger.” Up to 12 honorable HBCU students will each earn a $2,500 grant.
  Deadline: December 1, 2022.

1. Thurgood Marshall College Fund Scholarships: To qualify, you need to be an incoming/full-time student at one of the 47 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) financed by the Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF). The scholarship is worth $10,000 and its deadline varies from January –February while its Spring Scholarship lasts from August to October.
2. GEICO HBCU Tailgate Tour Community Contest: HBCU students have the opportunity to enter to win a $1,000 scholarship for themselves and another $1,000 for the charity of their choosing by submitting a one-minute video outlining the work they perform in their community!
3. Deadline: 0ctober 31st. 2022.
4. APF Queen-Nellie Evans Scholarship: Students in marginalized communities are eligible for this scholarship. It is worth $4,000 and the deadline for application is January 21st, 2023.
5. Other HBCU Scholarships are; Lexus Verses and Flow HBCU Scholarship, Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Scholarship Program, UNCF Healthcare Workplace Diversity Program, Chairish “Design Your Future” Scholarship, Papa John’s Scholarship, Chang Heaton Scholarship for Music Excellence, Black Students in STEM Scholarship Fund, Gladys Ruth Legacy “Service“ Memorial Scholarship, Future Leaders in Technology Scholarship – College Award.
6. Public Universities for these HBCU Scholarships are; Norfolk State University, North Carolina Central University, Grambling State University, Bluefield State College, Jackson State University, Morgan State University, Savannah State University, Langston University, Texas Southern University, Kentucky State University, North Carolina A & T State University, Coahoma Community College, Virginia State University, Florida Agricultural, and Mechanical University, Mississippi Valley State University, Delaware State University, Alabama State University, Prairie View A & M University, South Carolina State University, Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
